Started playing tennis as a six year old. At 15 he stopped
playing football and hockey and concentrated on tennis instead.
First breakthrough: Swedish master as an 18 year old. Went pro
in 1990. Sees 1994 as the big breakthrough year himself on the
ATP tour, especially the victory over his idol Stefan Edberg
at that year's US Open (6-4, 6-4, 6-0 in the third round, then
reached the quarter-final where he lost to Michael Stich): In
doubles with Jan Apell Jonas made the breakthrough also as a
doubles player that year. They finished the year by winning
the Master finals and Davis Cup final against Russia. In 2001
he was ranked as the world's best doubles player.
1997 was Jonas Bjorkman's most fantastic year yet. He won three
ATP titles and climbed to fourth place in the singles rankings.
Jonas Bjorkman is outgoing, both as a person and as a player.
He has great passion and plays an attacking and attractive tennis
best suited to fast surfaces. His tennis has been influenced
by amongst others Stefan Edberg.
Jonas has won 6 singles titles, 51 doubles titles and three
DC finals (1994, 1997, 1998). During a long and successful career
he has won roughly 14 million USD in prize money. He lives in
Monaco but still represents Vaxjo Tennis Association.
